Saving Dogs In the U.S. And In Russia

Man helps save 'lucky dog' from icy river
One Iowa man's quick actions Monday morning helped save the life of a dog stuck in icy river water in Madison County.

Jerry Romine, 56, of West Des Moines was traveling on a dirt road near Winterset with his dog, Lucy. After Romine stopped so Lucy could relieve herself, he heard barks from another dog by an old bridge near the Middle River.

Romine put Lucy back in his truck and headed that way.

"I looked around the bridge and the dog took off running and was barking at this other dog in the water," he said.

The dog in the water, Sam — a 13-year-old Labrador mix — was holding on for his life, having just his head and upper body sticking out of the icy river. Romine said Sam's wails "made my blood curdle."...MORE
